Second-year students of the Department of Forest Industry Engineering, Faculty of Forestry, made a day-long technical trip to the Seydiköy Forest Depot on October 20, 2026, under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ali VAR, as part of the “Lumber Industry” course.

The Seydiköy Forest Depot, located within the boundaries of the Burdur Bucak Forest Enterprise Directorate, offered our students a rich field experience in terms of the diversity of industrial wood raw materials and storage and marketing opportunities.

Depot Management and Production Processes Examined On Site

During the trip, organized to support students’ theoretical background with field observations, the depot’s administrative and operational processes were covered in detail. In this context, students were given training on the following topics:

Administrative Processes: Preparation of depot documents (stacking ledger, dispatch note, transport permit, etc.) and legal procedures.

Forestry Operations: Marking, ORKOD, barcode, and scaling (measurement) work.

Occupational Safety: Occupational health and safety rules in sector activities.

Following the training, the industrial wood production process, the classification of produced wood according to its most suitable uses, correct stacking in the depot, sales stages, and shipment processes to the factory were examined on site.

Quality Grading Practice on Sawlogs

In the practice-focused final part of the trip, detailed technical examinations were carried out on sawlogs. To this end, students reinforced their professional skills by practicing hands-on in the following areas:

Taking diameter and length measurements,

Observing and measuring wood defects such as spiral grain, sweep, cracks, knots, reaction wood, discoloration, and rot,

Establishing quality classes according to the identified defects.
